Medvedev's Rome Open title defence ended by USA's Paul

Published by , Tuesday 05/14/24 19:38

Daniil Medvedev's Rome Open title defence came to an end at the last-16 stage on Tuesday after the world number four was knocked out in straight sets by Tommy Paul, 6-1, 6-4.

Second seed Medvedev has never successfully defended an ATP Tour crown and was well below his best, stunned by American Paul who claimed his first win against the former US Open champion.

Paul will play Hubert Hurkacz, who knocked out Rafael Nadal earlier in the tournament, in his first Masters 1000 quarter-final on clay.

"I love it (clay) and that's the first time that I've said that in a long time really," said Paul on court.

"I had a bit of training before the clay court season this year and it really helped. I'm really comfortable and I'm having fun out here."

Medvedev, 28, had a great chance at the Foro Italico after a raft of stars either withdrew or were eliminated early, but instead he became the latest big name to be dumped out of the last major tournament before this month's French Open.

Rome is missing the world's top four ranked men after Novak Djokovic's exit on Sunday and Italian world number two Jannik Sinner and third-ranked Carlos Alcaraz both dropped out injured before the tournament.

Holger Rune, who lost last year's final to Medvedev, and Madrid champion Andrey Rublev -- ranked sixth in the world -- and beaten finalist Felix Auger-Aliassime have also been eliminated.

Hoping to pounce is world number five and 2017 Rome champion Alexander Zverev after sweeping past unseeded Nuno Borges 6-2, 7-5 to set up a quarter-final clash with Taylor Fritz.

Later on centre court, reigning Monte Carlo champion Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Australia's Alex de Minaur.

So great to see Paolini who lost 62,61 in 69 minutes get paid the same as Zverev, who lost in 4 sets, total 4 hours and 19 minutes. Today's "equality" 🤣

"Visible to the media" but not to the TV viewers, they only show the hawkeye when it doesn't contradict the referee. With that said, anyone who saw the match knows that Carlos would have won anyway. Zverev played awesome but run out of gas while Carlos hade plenty in the tank.

Players have to sign contracts to play in the tournaments and most often those contain clauses regarding PR relations which preclude players making negative comments about the tournament, tournament officials and employees.

Can't see him winning one

I wish him well but there is no reason to expect him to win at that level for so long. It’s too much, he is right to put all that in another category

30 Grand Slams = dreaming. Possibly 10-15 GS depending on the extent of major injuries. Jannik will be highly competitive moving forward. Rafa, Roger, Pete Sampras and Djoko would have overwhelmed Alcaraz at their peak. Djoko would have likely won the FO without injury.

As hawkeye is not used at the FO it can't really be said that it was a double fault. All systems have a margin of error. Yes hawkeye has a very small margin- something like 3mm and the line judge/umpi
