Fonseca impresses again in Madrid!

Fonseca impresses again in Madrid!

Joao Fonseca continues to blossom. The unstoppable Brazilian never ceases to amaze. He's burning up the stages. Unknown to the public just two months ago, the right-handed player is now bursting onto the scene.

As a reminder, he defied the odds at the Rio tournament. Then ranked a modest 655th in the world (now 242nd), he surprised everyone by qualifying for the quarter-finals. Far from satisfied, the youngest player reached the quarter-finals again last week in Bucharest (beaten by Tabilo).

Invited by the organizers of the Madrid tournament, the 1.85m player seized the opportunity. Facing Alex Michelsen (ranked 70th in the world), the Brazilian came out on top in a 2h01 match (4-6, 6-0, 6-2). After a nervous start, he quickly recovered to win 15 of the last 19 games of the match.

In the next round, the Brazilian will meet Cameron Norrie (ranked 30th in the world). If successful, he could break into the world's top 200 for the first time in his young career.

Amazing defence at the start of the 2nd set, Aryna seemed to fall away after failing to break. Well played Iga.
