Sinner-Tsitsipas, a refereeing error with far-reaching consequences!
The Monte-Carlo semi-final between Jannik Sinner and Stefanos Tsitsipas was marked by a major refereeing error at a key moment in the match. The Greek served a double fault on a point that would have given the Italian a double break in the 3rd set (4-1), but neither the linesman nor the chair umpire (Frenchwoman Aurélie Tourte) called the ball out.
The point was played, Sinner lost it, and Tsitsipas eventually held his serve to come back to 3-2. The Italian could only see that the ball's mark on the clay was clearly out. He should have served to take a 5-1 lead in this final set, which might have completely changed the outcome of the match. In the end, Tsitsipas came back to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and reach the final.
All of which lends further credence to the ATP's decision to switch to 100% electronic refereeing for all ATP Tour tournaments from the 2025 season onwards.
